A visit to the Dokter

Tthis is such a gorgeous little bar! There is no cuter bar in Amsterdam than Cafe de Dokter. I have taken many friends from inside and outside of Amsterdam here and it is always a winner. This tiny bar, in the heart of Amsterdam in an alley aside Kalverstraat (the main shopping street) and next to the famous Begijnhof, was established on 2 September 1798 and is still going strong.

It is a typical 'brown-bar' and known as the smallest one in Amsterdam. There are 2 or 3 tables outside in the alley and inside you can sit at the bar or at one of the 4 tables. The bartender is a great jazz connaisseur so there is always jazz playing and if you ask him about it, he will not hesitate to tell you great stories about the music he plays (which is all his private collection). When you enter you feel like you have escaped the busy, touristy centre of Amsterdam and entered the 1920s. Hanging on the wall and from the ceiling you will find many many relics, covered in dust. You can get some nuts, cheese and sausages in the bar, but they mainly serve drinks. This is a bar as a bar should be and hopefully you will enjoy this little romantic gem as much as I always do!
