I find the neighborhood Oud-Zuid does not have many nice places to go. Closest nice area is Oud-West or de Pijp. So when in Oud-Zuid and wanting to grab a drink somewhere, what places can you go? The is one, hidden, definitely not trendy, very old bar called Café Welling and I love the place. This typical bown bar that has been with us for a while and hopefully will stay us for a while as well.
Welling is definitely not going for hip and trendy, it just has character, authenticity and you can feel its history and age when you are inside. Home brewed hard liquors are sold inside, so ask the waiter to try, and good draft bears are always available.
Take the opportunity to buy aso called 'kopstootje' (headbutt): a beer and a young jenever (our version of gin) on the side. This old brown bar is the perfect environment where such a tradition can be executed.
